Happy Birthday, Badasses!

This March 2014 meeting was a special one.

Alissa, Cris, Erin, Jeni, Jill, Katie, Lindsay, Melissa, Stephanie, and Val were all present for dinner and discussion at Delicia on College Ave.

The. Whole. Group. (Well, almost, but I’ll get to that in a bit).

We conferred about the Golem and The Jinni by Helene Wecker. A story of what it means to be human, what it means to be alive, and what it means to be bonded to others.

The story was beautiful; a journey to and through parts of the world we hadn't yet explored. This mystical tale inspired questions about how we truly see the world. We shared thoughts on the supernatural, reincarnation, the evolution of society, and how culture plays such a large role in our identities, the 5th anniversary of the Badass book club was a satisfying one.

BTW: We’ve met 56 times. And for our birthday, the best gift ever: the announcement that our remote member Loren would be returning to Indianapolis.  Hip, Hip, Hooray!

These women, who sat with me around this table, are a family. We share so much more than a love of reading. We share a love of life. The joys, frustrations, heartbreaks, and milestones. It’s a circle of friendship and understanding; built from many personalities and parts, molded, and given life by a magic cultivated over 5 years of fiction, poetry, YA, non-fiction, and memoirs.  Every month we meet, and then we go our separate ways till the next book brings us together again.

It’s a bond like no other.

“All of us are lonely at some point or another, no matter how many people surround us. And then, we meet someone who seems to understand. She smiles, and for a moment the loneliness disappears.”

Well put, Helene.

Till April, ladies...
